Please help our daughter.” When ex-Marine Jack Ford receives a letter containing news of a daughter he never knew he had, he feels compelled to return to China, a country he hasn’t visited since 1989 when, as a young American spy, he fell in love with a beautiful student activist and found himself caught up in the horrors of the Tiananmen Square massacre. But why has Xia got in touch now, after a thirty-year silence? On arrival in Beijing, Jack finds himself accidentally in possession of an explosive piece of information both the Chinese and American governments are desperate to get their hands on. Alone in a strange city, suspected of being a traitor by his own side, not knowing whom to trust, Jack is faced with an impossible dilemma: should he save his new-found daughter or prevent a new world war from breaking out?

Review The Beijing Conspiracy by Fany Van Hemelen:
A dramatic political story about the survival of the fittest of the world.

Jack is thrown back in time when he receives a letter for helping his unknown daughter. Thirty years ago he was in a complex relation with Xia, a student activist who was protesting for a better life. As an ex- marine he was starting fresh but now he can’t forget this and soon he is back in Beijing. In Beijing he suddenly discovers strange things and an incredibly important document. He has to choose to save his daughter or the world.

The author has written this story with the picture in her mind of the lonely tank man in 1989 at the massacre of the Tiananmen square. Like many people she could never forget this image and that’s why she creates this book.

The Beijing Conspiracy is an old school spy novel about the “New Cold War” between China and The United States. Even it is fiction, it is a very realistic plot with a subtle message. It is time to stop messing up in our world today, because otherwise this ending is not far away anymore. The characters are well-drawn, it is filled with action and it is an exciting political thriller.
I am curious to read other stories by Shamini Flint.
